Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. 

The overall objective of the UNEP's Economy Division is to encourage decision-makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. 

The Knowledge and Risk Unit of the Chemicals and Health Branch promotes scientific approaches and knowledge for the sound management of chemicals including through implementation of UNEA resolutions. The Knowledge and Risk Unit gathers, compiles and analyses state of the art information and data, including through monitoring activities, inventories and assessments, to allow policymakers to make informed decisions on the sound management of chemicals and waste. The Unit executes projects and covers topics related to lead in paint, persistent organic pollutants, highly hazardous pesticides, chemicals in products, among others. The Unit also addresses issues of concern highlighted by governments, such as antimicrobial resistance, and assists in implementing mandates received through the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) on the GCO-II, sustainable chemistry and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The position is located in the Industry and Economy Division, Chemicals and Health Branch, Knowledge and Risk Unit, at the Geneva duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head, Knowledge and Risk Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties;

Responsibilities

   Strong technical delivery and science-based global pharmaceutical and AMR agenda setting, including in the context of the Quadripartite Join Secretariat for AMR. 
   Support governments better understand risks and take action through regulations and fiscal incentives promote green and sustainable pharmacy. 
   Strengthened engagement with the private sector, key drivers for innovation, change, investment in alternatives as well as for addressing legacies. 
   Increased funding, through dedicated time for fundraising and higher visibility of UNEP’s work 
   Coordinated delivery of the UNEP work in different divisions, ONE Health Initiative, regional offices and with strategic partners, including team supervision for optimum efficiency and productivity.
   Coordinate corporate reporting on Pharmaceutical and AMR
   Strong technical inputs to GEF pharma project
   Liaise with Quatripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR (FAO, WHO, WOHA and UNEP)
   Ensure clear accountability of results achieved in UNEP activities within this sector.
   Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

PLANNING & ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies, identifies priority activities and assignments, adjusts priorities as required, allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work, foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning, monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary, uses time efficiently.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in earth or environmental sciences, management, or a related field is desirable. A first-level university degree in the same field, in combination with two additional years of qualifying relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management is required.

Specific experience on the AMR issue is required.

Experience in working with the private sector is desirable.

Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Experience working in an inter-intergovernmental organization setting is desirable.

Experience in raising funds for your projects/programmes is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one (1) year and may be subject to extension.
